Tips for a Successful Signing
The following tips were submitted by author, Brad Johnson. Brad has had
plenty of signing experiences over the past two months, and has come up with a
prioritized list of:
"The keys to a successful signing"
- Location of signing table (preferably 15-20 feet from main entrance)
- Store traffic (right time and day of week)
- Active in-store promo (an employee handing out brochures/a review to patrons)
- Pre-store prep (Book featured in front of store, employees who have read the book, etc...)
- Pre-media exposure (feature articles)
- Store type (rural, urban, independent, or chain)
- Built-in clientele (locals who know author)
What's interesting is that if the first four points are covered, the signing is
generally good; that is, with no media, a signing can go very well. But you can have
great media with a poor location of the signing table (Upstairs, Art section) and have a
terrible event.
Many stores don't understand that an author (like a product) has to be merchandised in
order to sell.
